COOK GARDEN MOSAIC PROJECT

Dear friends;

I’m writing you on behalf of The Factory Community Centre, the Housing Communities Program, local residents and community workers to invite you to participate in the “Cook Garden Mosaic Project”. The project will take place from the 9^th of March until the 27^th of April.

The “Cook Garden Mosaic Project” aims to bring together local children, residents and gardeners on a mosaic project to improve the Cook Garden by installing artwork produced by the community on either side of the Gardens entrance gate.

The project will give you the opportunity to be part of several workshops around Redfern/Waterloo (please see workshops dates and times in the attached flyer). The final installation of the mosaic will be on the 27^th of April in the corner of Pitt and Raglan St. and everyone is invited to participate. 

The mosaic project is being produced under the Waterloo NAB umbrella and is sponsored by the City of Sydney, Housing NSW and Club NSW. At the same time the project will be supported by community groups/agencies like the UNSW Community Development Project (UNSW CDP), SCCA, Mercy Arms and many others that will joins us for this fantastic project. We estimated that more than 200 residents will take part in the creation of the mosaic and the workshops will provide a great opportunity for people to get together.

REDWatch meetings

RedWatch is a community group, which covers the Sydney suburbs of Redfern Eveleigh Darlington and Waterloo. REDWatch exists to monitor Government involvement in our area and to push for outcomes that benefit the community and not just the Government.

This month, Pre- the state election, Representatives from the three main NSW Government parties will be attending to host a briefing and Q/A session on their current/ future Housing policies.

RedWatch meetings are the 1st Thursday of the month at 6pm

Waterloo Safety and Wellbeing Action Group (WSWAG)

Open to all those residents concerned about community safety, and the agencies who work in Waterloo on community safety issues and promotion of health /wellbeing. The dates for the WSAG meetings will be the second Wednesday of each month as follows:

Community Learning and Research Committee

Following up the success of the Community Learning and Research Forum held on October 7th ,facilitated by Judy Stubbs.  The Forum agreed to set up this Committee with membership open to anyone who wished to participate. The first meeting will look at the notes from the Forum and start to develop a Community Learning and Research Plan for 2011.

 The next national Census of Population and Housing will be conducted on the night of Tuesday 9 August 2011.

The Census aims to accurately measure the number of people in Australia on Census night, their key characteristics, and the dwellings in which they live.

In order to assist in the preparation and operation of the Census, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting around 43,000 community-minded field staff all over Australia, 10,000 of which will be in NSW and the ACT, to help us count the nation.  AVAILABLE JOB OPPORTUNITIES Area Supervisors
 Collectors

 Area Supervisors must take responsibility for the Collectors and Special Collectors undertaking the delivery and collection of Census forms to and from all dwellings in their allocated areas. They are also responsible for liaising and reporting to the Census Management Unit (CMU).
Area Supervisors must work from home, use their own telephone for Census purposes and have the use of a vehicle which can be securely locked. Area Supervisors must provide secure storage in their home for up to 72 packs of Census material (approximately 1.6 cubic metres).
Area Supervisors need to be available for Census work from 18 April to 7 October 2011. During the peak collection and delivery phase of the Census, Area Supervisors will have to work weekdays and weekends, including evenings up to 9 pm. Selection Criteria for Area Supervisors Applications for Area Supervisor positions will be assessed against the following criteria:
 Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia, who is at least 18 years of age;
 Availability to work during the period 18 April to 07 October 2011;
 A current driver’s licence, the use of a secure vehicle and a home telephone;
 The ability to train and manage staff;
 An understanding of participative management, workplace diversity and occupational health and safety issues;
 Good communication and liaison skills with the ability to apply strong interpersonal skills in potentially challenging situations;
 Organisational ability and clerical skills;
 Ability to resolve operational issues and work under pressure;
 Good knowledge of the area to be enumerated and an awareness of the potential problems;
 Ability to maintain the security and confidentiality of information collected;
 Physical ability to handle large amounts of material and negotiate difficult terrain, if required; and
 Ability to represent the Australian Bureau of Statistics in a professional manner. Payment for Area Supervisors 
 Travelling, incidental and motor vehicle allowances are also applicable. An Area Supervisor will be paid between $4,300 and $7,500 depending on their workload.
AREA SUPERVISORS are responsible for delivering and collecting forms from all dwellings in a specified area. Collectors will be required to work from 1 July 2011 until 8 September 2011 and will be paid between $1,100 and $2,300 depending on their workload. Applications open 9 April 2011. Collectors are responsible for selecting, training, supervising and leading a team of Collectors. Area Supervisors will be required to work from 18 April 2011 until 7 October 2011 and will be paid between $4,300 and $7,500 depending on their workload. The Factory Community Centre - RedWater Markets (Redfern Park)

The Factory Community Centre host the RedWater Markets as a community project within the Redfern / Waterloo area with the support of the City of Sydney, Housing NSW and Clubs NSW.

The RedWater Markets are held every 3rd Saturday of the month from 8am till 4pm using community spaces to bring community life into Redfern Park.

The market focus is (not exclusively) on sustainable goods, handmade, recycled or second hand and is environmental friendly. All monies raised from the stallholder-fees are injected back into the community supporting local environmental projects such as the Waterloo Recycling Workshop and the Cycle-Re-Cycle Club also managed by the Factory Community Centre.

The RedWater Market is seeking volunteer artists to develop an “Open Community Stage” a space for everyone who wants to sing, act or exhibit their work.

REDWatch- Meeting on the Redvelopment of Redfern/ Waterloo - This Thursday night at the Factory 6pm Sharp

Dear REDWatch Members and Supporters

At Thursday’s REDWatch meeting we have arranged for the RWA CEO and Planners along with Senior HNSW staff to make a presentation to REDWatch. There will be a period for questions and we hope that the session will help REDWatch further formulate our response and submission. We have attached a flyer to promote the meeting so please encourage people to come along, listen to the presentation and ask their questions.

We have tried to provide in the flyer a summary of some of the key points in the BEP2 – There are some differences in opinion between the RWA and REDWatch as to how neutral this summary is as it includes some references to material not specifically in the BEP2 such as comparisons with the CoS proposed controls, the lack of population estimates and the lack of information about the future of HNSW properties outside the BEP2’s area.

At the present moment the presentation to REDWatch is the only community presentation we are aware of being held. The model for the information sessions we understand to be as a drop in, look at display boards and talk to planners rather than a presentations or public meetings. The first  RWA BEP 2 Information Session is on Thurs 3 Feb 1pm-3pm at Redfern Town Hall.
