Member for Heffron, The Hon Kristina Keneally MP - Lift Redfern

Member for Heffron, The Hon Kristina Keneally MP, will today accept a petition of over 10,000 signatures from the community campaign group "Lift Redfern: Make Redfern Station Accessible Now."

"I congratulate the campaigners on a successful month-long effort to collect enough signatures to force the O'Farrell Government to debate the future of Redfern Station in the Parliament," Ms Keneally said.

"As a local member, I wholeheartedly endorse and support this campaign. There is no doubt that Redfern Station, one of the city's busiest, needs a lift that provides access for the elderly, parents with prams, and people who rely on wheelchairs and other mobility aids."

Member for Marrickville, The Hon Carmel Tebbutt MP agrees, "Redfern is an important interchange station, used by many residents of the Marrickville electorate. This petition shows the O'Farrell Government that there is strong community support to upgrade Redfern Station and make it accessible."

Ms Keneally said the O'Farrell Government had dealt two blows to Redfern Station.

"Upon coming to office, the O'Farrell Government cancelled the City Relief Line, which would have provided a much-needed upgrade to Redfern Station," Ms Keneally said.

"Then, last week and with much fanfare, the Minister for Transport announced a $100 million 'blitz' of station upgrades - and Redfern Station was left out."

Ms Keneally will present the petition to the NSW Parliament. The debate is subject to the parliamentary schedule, but it is anticipated it will come on the agenda in the next session.
